What to do in Akureyri in Winter

I have just come back from a 2 month trip in Iceland, spending the majority of it in Akureyri. Akureyri is known as the capital of the north and if your doing the whole ring road of Iceland, I would recommend making this a stop. Here are a few of my favourite things you can do in the winter time.

If you like skiing, Hlidarfjall is the biggest ski resort in Iceland. Don’t get your hopes up as it’s not that big but if your into skiing I would recommend spending a few hours here.

How to get there

There aren’t any buses there so if you don’t have a car you can get a taxi or walk (Don’t walk! I did and it took me over 2 hours and I regretted every minute)

Check there website for prices and opening times.

This is where you will find the shops and cafes as well as the famous church Akureyrarkirkja. Iceland has some very interesting looking churches and this one is no exception. You can also get a nice view of the town from there. You can take as much time as you need here to stop for lunch, a coffee break or to grab some souvenirs.

Akureyri swimming pool has both indoor and outdoor swimming pools and an out door hot tub which is perfect in the cold weather.

The Northern lights are much better in the north so make sure you go out and have a look. Although it’s not guaranteed that you will see them. In the 2 months I was there I only got to see them once. But they were amazing and so worth the wait.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this post! let me know if you’ve found this helpful or if you’ve been and would add anything else to the list?

  2. That church is beautiful! You don’t often hear about places in Iceland other than Reykjavik, so this was super interesting to read! I SO badly want to see the Northern Lights one day, I’m so jealous!

  3. These photos are so dreamy. That looks like my perfect place because I love the cold. My boyfriend and I are hoping to go to either Iceland, Norway or Finland. We love the idea of going to one of those! x
